A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who helps to look after a relative who requires some degree of care, perhaps due to illness, disability, mental health issues or an alcohol or drug problem.

Being a young carer can be a struggle and stressful, with young carers feeling alone and isolated at times - Y sort it offers the following support to help Young Carers:

Referrals

Referrals can be made using a referral form, telephone or email, young people also self refer using these methods or social networking.

Each young carer's needs will be different and the demands of their caring role can also change so it is important that the delivery model reflects flexibility in how each young carer engages with our services.  The support offered to a young carer also depends on each individual circumstances and the nature of their caring role.

Young Carers Groups

Y Sort it will support, develop and deliver two young carer groups, one aged 10-12 years and 12-18 years, to provide a safe and fun space for young carers to relax, study, meet new friends, and access advice and support.  The groups and activities will take place during evenings and weekends on a weekly basis throughout the year, including holiday times. Free travel and pickups will be available for those wishing to access the group work sessions.

Y sort it Young Carers service provides various opportunities for young carers to access respite including day trips, over night camps, activity weekends and various outings such as sport, music or theatre events.
